Of all the aspects of luthiery, hand crafting stringed instrument bows is one of Richard's favorites. He became passionate about bow making when he discovered that it's far more challenging to craft a bow than a violin. “You have to have several skills: the skills of a jeweler, a precious metal worker, a wood-worker and a mathematician,” says Richard. “It's infinitely more difficult, and the chances of a truly successful bow are limited not only by the maker but also by the quality of the material. It's not always apparent in the materials until you're halfway through as to whether the bow will be good. It's a huge challenge and I like a challenge.”
